Founded in 1993, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is one of the oldest and leading private universities in Bangladesh where academic excellence is a tradition, teaching a passion and lifelong learning a habit. Live in Field Experience (LFE) is a signature course of IUB. It allows IUB students, most of whom come from urban settings, to have an immersive experience of everyday life in rural Bangladesh. Unique in Bangladesh, the overarching idea, which owes its roots to some of the leading social thinkers of this region, is to bridge the gap in knowledge that an urban student has about their rural counterparts. As part of the LFE, which is a mandatory course, small groups of students (usually 5-10, mix of male and female, and English and Bangla medium backgrounds) spend a certain amount of time at different locations in Bangladesh and experience life in the fields.
University of West London Professor Hafiz T. A. Khan visits IUB

University of West London Professor and public health expert Hafiz T. A. Khan delivered several lectures and conducted a number of sessions on research related topics at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on July 28, 2023 and August 03, 2023 respectively.
He was invited by the Department of Public Health under the School of Pharmacy and Public Health (PPH) and the Outreach, Extension, and Continuing Education (OECE) unit of the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor of IUB. Prof. Khan holds key positions at the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare at the University of West London, UK, and is an Associate Professorial Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, University of Oxford, UK.
The first lecture, titled ‘Statistical Analysis in Public Health’, delivered on July 28, 2023, was aimed at the Master of Public Health (MPH) students of IUB. Around 25 students and faculty members, alongside Prof. Dr. JMA Hannan, Dean of SPPH, attended the lecture. Following the lecture, Prof. Khan engaged in a constructive discussion with the faculty members about academic development.
On August 03, 2023, Prof. Khan conducted a session on inferential statistics for public health research, grant writing, proposal development in public health, and publication for the faculty members of SPPH. Subsequently, he delivered a public lecture titled "Public Health Challenges for Ageing Populations." The lecture focused on the global phenomenon of population change leading to an increased number of older people in many countries. The subsequent rise in life expectancy has posed significant challenges to each country, especially concerning the health system. Prof. Khan shared insights into public health challenges faced by ageing populations and offered recommendations to address these issues.
The public lecture commenced with a welcome address by IUB Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Niaz Ahmed Khan, PhD. At the conclusion of the lecture, Prof. Khan was joined by the IUB Vice Chancellor Tanweer Hasan, PhD, and the faculty members of the Department of Public Health in a lunch and networking session, during which the Honorable VC delivered his concluding remarks.
