Founded in 1993, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is one of the oldest and leading private universities in Bangladesh where academic excellence is a tradition, teaching a passion and lifelong learning a habit. IUB currently has more than 9,800 undergraduate and graduate students and over 13,700 alumni. The students of IUB experience an exciting academic life with copious opportunities to explore and nurture their innate talent.
Live in Field Experience (LFE) is a signature course of IUB. It allows IUB students, most of whom come from urban settings, to have an immersive experience of everyday life in rural Bangladesh. Unique in Bangladesh, the overarching idea, which owes its roots to some of the leading social thinkers of this region, is to bridge the gap in knowledge that an urban student has about their rural counterparts. As part of the LFE, which is a mandatory course, small groups of students (usually 5-10, mix of male and female, and English and Bangla medium backgrounds) spend a certain amount of time at different locations in Bangladesh and experience life in the fields.

In a display of remarkable talent, two students from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) have made their mark at the Falling Walls Lab Bangladesh 2023.
Students from universities across Bangladesh submitted 2 to 3-minute videos outlining a specific problem and their proposed solution. After undergoing a rigorous selection process by the DAAD Research Ambassadors, Bushra Rahman, with her project 'Breaking the Wall of Traditional Drying,' and Rifat Bin Sultan, presenting 'Breaking the Wall of Harvesting Solar Energy,' advanced to the country’s regional final round, where they had the opportunity to pitch their ideas live. Rifat Bin Sultan then went on to secure the first runner-up position with his innovative idea.
The pitch competition, which took place on September 3, 2023, saw participation from 11 finalists representing various universities. They were meticulously selected by DAAD Research Ambassadors Dr. Rumana Rana from Khulna University, Dr. M. Nuruzzaman Khan from the University of Dhaka, and Mr. Mahmudul Hasan, Programme Officer, UNDP Bangladesh. The event was graced with the presence of the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Jan Janowski, Chargé d'Affaires, German Embassy. Before presenting at the Lab, the finalists received expert training from Dr. Bhaskar Das of KIIT- Technology Business Incubator.
Falling Walls Lab is a distinctive pitch competition offering a platform for young researchers and entrepreneurs to showcase their research projects, business plans, or social initiatives. This year, DAAD partnered with North South University to bring the Falling Walls Lab to Bangladesh.
