Founded in 1993, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is one of the oldest and leading private universities in Bangladesh where academic excellence is a tradition, teaching a passion and lifelong learning a habit. IUB currently has more than 9,800 undergraduate and graduate students and over 13,700 alumni. The students of IUB experience an exciting academic life with copious opportunities to explore and nurture their innate talent.
Live in Field Experience (LFE) is a signature course of IUB. It allows IUB students, most of whom come from urban settings, to have an immersive experience of everyday life in rural Bangladesh. Unique in Bangladesh, the overarching idea, which owes its roots to some of the leading social thinkers of this region, is to bridge the gap in knowledge that an urban student has about their rural counterparts. As part of the LFE, which is a mandatory course, small groups of students (usually 5-10, mix of male and female, and English and Bangla medium backgrounds) spend a certain amount of time at different locations in Bangladesh and experience life in the fields.
Every student is an institution in themselves, says Walton CEO at IUB’s Orientation

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized the Orientation program for the Autumn 2023 semester at its Bashundhara campus in Dhaka on September 21, 2023. Mr. Golam Murshed, Managing Director and CEO of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Ltd., spoke as a special guest at the event.
Addressing the students, Golam Murshed said, "Each of you is an institution in yourselves. Being an institution doesn't mean you have to be a company where there is business, employees, and revenue. Each one of you is an institution because you possess your own unique characteristics, qualities, thinking power, abilities, and potential. You can speak, make decisions, and walk your path. An institution operates just like that. From today, start believing that you have all these qualities within you."
Emphasizing the empowerment of women in sustainable development and in achieving Vision 2041, the Vice-Chancellor of IUB, Professor Tanweer Hasan, PhD, said, "We have taken conscious steps to increase the number of female students at IUB. One and a half years ago, the proportion of female students at IUB was 32%. I am proud to announce today that now the percentage of female students at IUB is 44%. This wasn't achieved overnight. It was possible due to the relentless efforts of all the teachers, officials, and staff of IUB."
Thanking the parents and guardians, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, PhD, said, "Gratitude to the esteemed parents. They have entrusted their greatest asset, their children, to our care. We assure that we will do everything possible within our limited capacity to uphold the trust they have placed in us."
In the Autumn 2023 semester, nearly 1,650 students have enrolled in IUB, which is the highest enrollment in the history of IUB. Among them, approximately 48% are female. Currently, the total number of students at IUB is around 11,000; this too is the highest in IUB's history.
Deans of the five schools of IUB, the registrar, heads of various departments, parents, teachers, officers, and staff were present at the event. The program was hosted by Ms. Lima Chowdhury, Head of Admissions and Financial Aid. Members of the IUB Music Club also performed at the event.
