Founded in 1993, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) is one of the oldest and leading private universities in Bangladesh where academic excellence is a tradition, teaching a passion and lifelong learning a habit. IUB currently has more than 9,800 undergraduate and graduate students and over 13,700 alumni. The students of IUB experience an exciting academic life with copious opportunities to explore and nurture their innate talent.
Live in Field Experience (LFE) is a signature course of IUB. It allows IUB students, most of whom come from urban settings, to have an immersive experience of everyday life in rural Bangladesh. Unique in Bangladesh, the overarching idea, which owes its roots to some of the leading social thinkers of this region, is to bridge the gap in knowledge that an urban student has about their rural counterparts. As part of the LFE, which is a mandatory course, small groups of students (usually 5-10, mix of male and female, and English and Bangla medium backgrounds) spend a certain amount of time at different locations in Bangladesh and experience life in the fields.
IUB Pays Tribute to Prof. Niaz Zaman for Her Literary Contributions

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), celebrated the exceptional literary contributions of Prof. Niaz Zaman in a commemorative event held on October 19, 2023. As Advisor to the Department of English and Modern Languages and Kazi Nazrul Islam and Abbasuddin Ahmed Research Center at IUB, Prof. Zaman previously held the honorary position of Supernumerary Professor before retiring as a Professor of English from the University of Dhaka.
Abdul Hai Sarker, Chairman of the IUB Board of Trustees, acknowledged Prof. Zaman's exemplary contributions to teaching, research, and public service through translations. He expressed hope that she would continue her exceptional work for the benefit of the IUB community and the wider intellectual and civic communities.
Prof. Tanweer Hasan, the Vice Chancellor of IUB, praised Prof. Zaman's extraordinary work in literary translations. He emphasized her role in introducing the captivating world of Bengali literature to a global audience, describing her as an institution in herself, inspiring students, academicians, and literary enthusiasts.
Prof. Firdous Azim from the Department of English and Humanities at BRAC University commended the breadth of Prof. Zaman's interests and expertise. She highlighted Prof. Zaman's contributions to the translated works of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, emphasizing her role in enriching the Bangladeshi literary circle.
Prof. Razia Sultana Khan, representing the English and Modern Languages department at IUB, underlined the mentorship role played by Prof. Zaman as a role model, teacher, counselor, advisor, advocate, and ally, shaping the academic and professional journeys of many.
Mahrukh Mohiuddin, the Managing Director of the University Press Limited, appreciated Prof. Zaman's tireless efforts in bridging cultures and showcasing Bangladeshi writers to the world through literary translations.
Dr. Naureen Rahnuma, Head of IUB’s Department of English and Modern Languages, highlighted Prof. Zaman's extensive contributions to academic and literary communities in her introductory remarks. Recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Anannya Sahitya Puroshkar, Lekhika Sangha Award, Bangla Academy Sahitya Puroshkar, National Archives Award, Atwar Hussain Award, and the UPL Award for Prolific Author, Prof. Zaman has had a significant impact on the world of literature. In his closing remarks, Prof. Bokhtiar Ahmed, the Dean of IUB's School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, reiterated the significance of Prof. Zaman's contributions to the university and the broader community, emphasizing her scholarly, educational, and creative endeavors.
Moderated by Andaleeb Choudhury, Lecturer in the Department of English and Modern Languages, the event was attended by academic and alumni members, Prof. Zaman's sons - Zarre Omar and Zain Omar- besides family members, Professor Naila Zaman Khan, and Ambassador Shahed Akhtar.
